As exclusivity fades, AT&T success still linked to iPhone

companion photo for As exclusivity fades, AT&T success still linked to iPhone

AT&T released its financial results for the third quarter this week, and the iPhone still figures heavily in the company’s good news. Despite the continued increases in subscribers and average revenue per user and record low churn rate—which the company proudly attributed to the iPhone in past quarters—AT&T stressed that its wide selection of devices were key to its success. That may be the message that the company wants to send as it hints that its exclusivity with the iPhone may be going away soon.

Freescale merges ARM, E-Ink for next-gen e-book hardware

companion photo for Freescale merges ARM, E-Ink for next-gen e-book hardware

Freescale, the ailing semiconductor spinoff of Motorola, has announced a licensing deal with E-Ink to integrate controllers for electronic paper displays into its i.MX family of ARM-based system-on-chips (SoC). This new combination of ARM and E-Ink won’t immediately provide any dramatic benefits in terms of either battery life or functionality, but the move does lay the groundwork for a coming era when e-paper displays gain color capabilities and reduce their refresh time enough to support animation.

ARM fills out CPU lineup with Cortex A5

companion photo for ARM fills out CPU lineup with Cortex A5

ARM has filled out its burgeoning Cortex A family of processors with a new addition at the bottom end of the lineup, the newly announced Cortex A5. The A5 is intended to replace the ARM9 and ARM11 parts commonly found in everything from smartphones to the Nintendo DS, and as such, it’s not exactly a barn-burner in performance. But then again, it doesn’t have to be, because A5’s focus is on providing support for the full range of A-profile features in the smallest possible power envelope. In other words, A5 supports the full range of ARMv7 ISA extensions and Cortex A features, so binaries that are compiled for A8 and A9 will run on A5 (albeit much more slowly). And, like its other A-profile siblings, A5 comes in single- and multi-core flavors.

companion photo for Updated MacBook gets dismembered

Rest assured that the world is still in harmony: Apple has released a new machine and iFixit has torn it apart. While it may not be the new iMac, the polycarbonate MacBook is getting a lot of attention and has a few changes to its internals that aren’t specification related.
