Rumor: iPod classic to get a camera too

companion photo for Rumor: iPod classic to get a camera too

It’s not a surprise to hear that OmniVision, which provides Apple with the 3.2MP camera module for the iPhone 3GS, will most likely be supplying Apple with camera modules for some future iPod models. What we are finding hard to swallow, though, is the rumor that Apple’s iPod classic will also be getting a built-in camera with the expected refresh next month.

Holographic GPU renders at near real-time speeds

companion photo for Holographic GPU renders at near real-time speeds

If the resurgence of 3D glasses at local cinemas are any indication, we all want a bit more, ahem, depth to our cinematic experience. Unfortunately, the stylish glasses don’t exactly lend themselves to an immersive experience. What would be really cool would be animated holograms. While holograms aren’t the easiest things in the world to make, it is possible to take a 3D computer model and compute the data necessary to generate a hologram that can be used to project a 3D image from a screen. MacBook on life support, but Apple not pulling the plug yet

companion photo for MacBook on life support, but Apple not pulling the plug yet

Apple has kept the classic white plastic MacBook around as a sub-$1000 (well, barely) option in its notebook lineup ever since the introduction of the aluminum “unibody” MacBook last fall. While the aluminum 13″ model recently graduated to “pro” status, the lonely MacBook has sat by seemingly ignored, languishing without significant updates. That won’t last for long, though, if the latest rumor is to be believed.

New Get a Mac ads beat dead PC virus horse, waste good jokes

companion photo for New Get a Mac ads beat dead PC virus horse, waste good jokes

Apple has released a series of two new “Get a Mac” ads that seem to poke a little more fun at Microsoft’s “Laptop Hunters” ads. However, even the addition of Patrick Warburton’s soothing voice and a clever switch-a-roo by John Hodgman’s PC character isn’t enough to overcome the tired horse that Apple keeps beating.

At a press event hosted by the New York Public Library, Sony put their recently announced Reader hardware on display and provided an overview of its recent announcements. But the event was more than simply a recap of past announcements. The library location provided context for a program, run through Sony’s e-book store, which will allow users to identify their local public library borrow books through its site. There is also new hardware: by the holidays, Sony plans on having a 3G-enabled Reader with a tall seven-inch screen.

Nokia’s new Wintel netbook: what happened to Maemo + ARM?

companion photo for Nokia's new Wintel netbook: what happened to Maemo + ARM?

Nokia is moving further away from its core cellphone business, today announcing its first netbook. While the evolution from 3G handset and Internet tablet maker to netbook designer may have been inevitable, the combination of hardware and software in the Nokia Booklet 3G will see the company embrace both Intel and Windows 7, instead of heading deeper into the ARM and Linux territory it staked out with its Internet tablets.
