Intel’s China-based Fab 68 will produce 65nm silicon exclusively when it goes online early next year, Intel has announced. The announcement is something of a surprise, since Intel had been restricted by US government export regulations from exporting high-end semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China, and when Fab 68 goes online, 65nm will be only two nodes behind the cutting edge.

The Summer 2009 edition of the twice-yearly Top 500 Supercomputer List is out, and there are some notable changes in this latest version. In terms of the perennial Intel/AMD horse race, after a period of holding steady at roughly 12 percent, AMD’s Opteron has resumed its decline as a total share of the processor families represented. AMD dropped from 12.2 percent six months ago to 8.6 percent on the current list, while Intel’s Xeons climbed from 73.6 percent to 78.6 percent.

to show, using direct user surveys, that consumers are highly confused
about netbooks, frustrated with their low performance, and typically
underuse their superb mobility. There are reasons for skepticism about

Hospital confirms Steve Jobs liver transplant

The Methodist University Hospital in Tennessee confirmed today via press release that Steve Jobs indeed received a liver transplant at Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in partnership with the University of Tennessee in Memphis. The announcement was made with Jobs’ permission, saying that he received a transplant “because he was the patient with the highest MELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) of his blood type and, therefore, the sickest patient on the waiting list at the time a donor organ became available.”
